I’ve just been mixing up some small quantities sharp sand and powdered hydrated lime (3 to 1) in a bucket in order to relay a few bricks and patch point a few small areas on the internal face of the 9 inch solid brickwork walls of my home. The powdered hydrated lime and sand seemed to mix up fairly well (no lumpy bits) and appears to be setting ok. What would have been the advantages if I had used Lime putty instead of powdered lime?

No no - that's hydraulic lime.
Hydrate is non-hydraulic, but if you leave it to make a putty I think it's more workable.

Putty mixes quicker in that you get a workable mix faster, and you get a 'stickier' mix which is nicer to handle, whether as mortar, plaster or render. There doesn't seem to be much in it when it comes to the time the stuff takes to carbonate.

It's also twelve years old and ideas have moved on a little since it was written, especailly about making (non-hydraulic) mortar from bags of hydrated lime.
It works fine. It's a darned sight cheaper than tubs and easier to obtain.
Just ensure it's fresh.
I add - hydraulic has its uses, but not as a subtitute for non-hydraulic in many applications.

Yes it's a good example, it's awful that people are still using cement. I took a walk around Carlisle Sunday, many historic buildings there, and a very nice 18th c brick wall has just had the stuff smeared in the joints.
You want to scream really.
And a strong hydraulic may have a similar effect.

Lime putty _is_ powdered lime plus water. The water may have been added at slaking time, or sometimes later, but the contents are exactly the same. The difference is that pre-made putty has been sitting around wet longer, and has thus built up maximum stickiness, and is wetted thoroughly, avoiding the risk of any non-wetted pieces causing blowing. However you can make the identical stuff yourself from bagged lime if you wish.

The point is I know Andrew has carried out the practical work not just knows the theory.
