Additional shaft in chimney

Hello all,

I have a C16th timber framed, Grade II* listed house on the Eng/Wales border.

In the centre of the house is a typical large chimney servicing two fireplaces, one on each side, and a bread oven on the third side. (The fourth side is yet to be uncovered!)
After removing some flaking cement plaster, I have discovered a further shaft into the chimney on the same face as the bread oven (although floor level and 2-3ft away).
This access is approximately 45cm wide x 60 cm high and is supported by a narrow metal lintel to the top.

Does anyone know what this might be???

Can you post a picture of it, charlieworld? I'm intrigued. I have a bread oven in my house, but with only one chamber, so I'm not sure I'd be able to answer your question. However, someone will be sure to be along soon with the answer.

We have one, I was told it was to hold kindling to dry it out ready for use.
