If I'd come across that pile of bones I'd have assumed it was a prehistoric version of the municipal tip.
On the first Civil Engineering job I worked on, we discovered that an abbatoir that had been on the site from early Victorian times right up to the 1960's had been using an abandoned mineshaft as a dumping ground for all it's "waste material". I can still remember the smell when the shaft cap was removed - the years since it was last used had not dulled the smell much.
