Nem - for some reason your link isn't working properly. I tried re-entering it into this post, without success. I suspect it might be something to do with its being a PDF.

Thanks Penners - yes I see that some of hasn't turned the right colour for a link.

As you say - cut and paste or I'm sure someone better than wot I am at computer stuff will make it work.

It's worth reading, especially now that the time to be out and about and doing house stuff is here.

Because the internet is intended to be independent of the system used to access it certain characters are not permitted because some sytstems have problems with them.

There is an 'old' document rfc1738 which set out the original rules. as a rough guide, lower case letters, numbers and a limited set of other characters from the ASCII character set. There are various revisions that slightly alter and extend the detail.

Strictly you can use things like spaces, apostrophies, etc but you shouldnt use them raw - they should be encoded in hex. In the original url all those %20 things are space characters - but because some systems will contract whitespace and some will treat them as the end of the line, you shouldnt use " " but "%20" A space character in the ASCII character set is the 32nd character or 20th if counting in hexadecimal. The same reasoning for various brackets, quotes etc. Some systems will do things to those characters so they wouldnt work in a url if sent as the raw character, so they get encoded.
In reality a lot of stuff that you shouldnt use will work fine becasue of the way that systems are written - but they are not guaranteed to work - sort of like my spelling is rubbish but people can generally understand what I mean.
