Our property is built on a hill, so LHS ground floor is at ground level, basement is underground, RHS ground level is located over an exposed basement. And we have damp, of course. The ground floor wall of the hall on the RHS is damp, and we could not see why, as this side of the house sits over the exposed basement. Now we have started to strip the walls in the basement we can see why - bl**dy cement render is forcing the damp upstairs. Why oh why is this stuff used (well we all know that one, don't we?). Needless to say it is coming off. And all the plastic anti-damp paint in the 'underground' cellar. I do have a question though - we will leave the brickwork exposed in this cellar. Will a coat of lime wash prevent dust, yet be transparent? We are not trying to convert this room into habitable space or anything like that - just well ventilated/breathable storage (70's concrete floor is being dug up too).
