A good news story for once!

One of the few old buildings in Southampton not to have been destroyed by either the Luftwaffe or the post-war planners has just re-opened after a £5.3m programme of works.

It's a fine looking building, no doubt about it, but £5.3 million ? :shock:

Also, I'm sure they would have had the best people available working on it (for £5.3m I'd hope so anyway) but I did wonder about this bit of the article: "The house structure was pinned to a 15-tonne concrete pillar" . Won't a timber-framed building need to move about a bit during the seasons?

He bought the building, restored it and sold it to the council as a museum and just about every Southampton schoolchild has visited it since.

So it's been in the care of the council for how long?

Well... nine years of work. That's what I would have charged.


But I don't pick up my hammer for less than a grand...
