I spotted this in the Coopers of Stowe catalogue that dropped through the letterbox this morning. Don't know whether it's any good, but just in case it might be useful to someone:

I use the wood grenade, although it does hurt when you hit your knee with a 4lb lump hammer after you've missed it (just in case you were wondering).

I recall a link on this forum for a site that sold a range of traditional tools for this type of work. Anyone still know of it?

Health & Safety Party Pooper - what is this country coming to when you can't whack yourself with a heavy hammer without someone interfering? :roll:

I've made a life's work (well so, far I have) of hammering, nailing, sawing (that one was very bloody), screwing, scraping and generally bending and bashing all parts of me - and it hasn't done me any (lasting) harm!

I must admit I find using the foot pump on the car tyre very tiring (groan) after more than 20 pumps and so I think I will still prefer the sledgehammer and the conical wedge to split logs.

I like the ascending order of weight of hammers to be hit with - carry on and it will be reminiscent of the 4 Yorkshiremen comparing how hard done by they were when they were a lad......

What would DIY be without a bit of self-mutilation every now and then anyway? Ahh, yes, less painful.

yesterday I hit mysef in the face with the handle of the axe, it wasn't going in or coming out, so I hit it further in with said sledge hammer for it to spring up and whack me one......... so now it's hard hat with safety visor when chopping logs.

Will wait and see how penners' gets on with his before I buy one.

Having just googled foot operated log splitters there are many on the market

But on checking the size logs they split, up to 220mm they are for slightly smaller logs and those smaller sizes will fit straight in the fire
