A different window question

I have just seen the details for a barn which is for sale for conversion. Its a very attractive building, and looks a bit like those semi-fortified farmhouses. Indeed from the pictures if it had chimneys it could be a fortified farmhouse/barn.

The problem with this sort of thing is that there are very few windows and those that there are are very narrow - so dont let much light in.

There are a number of doors which open into fresh air at first and second floor level which could be windowed/shuttered.

Can anyone point me at pictures of windows which might look reasonable in such a building if (well, long string of if's) we wanted to consider doing something.

Is this barn listed? Does your local authority have any policies which may cover barns being converted?

Is it within the curtilage of another listed building? Is there a local policy which may prevent domestic use?

Its not listed and permission is granted to permit change of use. (It isnt in the UK )

I am looking for small window designs that wouldnt look out of place. Small mullions ?

I think you'd really have to look at what there is around it, local traditions, etc etc...

I am planning to wander the local area and take lots of photos of similar buildings, but given how similar it looks to some things in this country - Im thinking Borders / Marches - I thought it might be worth asking what people have done. Doubtless if we think we want to go ahead then the same question arises with services/chimney etc How do you hide them to best effect.

Interesting stuff on that helm site but some things look terribly over modernised.

the best thing to do Mark, familiarise yourself with the aspect of similar barns in that region, you will then have a clearer idea as to what you like and as to what be suitable for the barn.

Do a barn crawl instead of a pub crawl.
