You might think there was not much amiss with this church:
The picture is taken from English Heritage's websites at PastScape and the same photo appears on Images of England
But we were taking our Sunday afternoon constitutional and happened upon this little wreck:
the photo coming from the BBC Buildings at Risk
Actually, even that, correct, photo does not tell much of the story. Go round the back and you will find a large portion of the roof slate missing with some hopeless polythene flapping idly in pretence of temporary repair. The interior is gutted, stained glass broken, major cracks enliven the masonry.
And this is listed Grade II*, a 12th-13th century building. Pevsner's description is here but while the Local Authority, North East Lincolnshire, have built a website they do not seem to have managed to wield the lime mortar trowel yet.
Maybe everyone relies on the, wrong, English Heritage photo and assumes all is well.
