The originally quoted web page includes the dreaded phrase "We need to move fast on this," -- oh how I hate that phrase, it usually means that the scheme is so bad they want to get it done before too many people know about it....

Well, they did move fast, all permissions in place and the statue ready for next week's ceremony, but I think it will be a nice addition to Edinburgh. Even more so than the worthy and stern statue of Adam Smith unveiled last week. When I have a pic, I will post it. Here's the original:

Bum, sculpted by Jessica McCain, was installed alongside Bobby in the Gaslamp Quarter pocket park next to the William Heath Davis House museum, operated by Frick's foundation, at 410 Island Ave.

Bum sits next to a previously donated statue of the celebrated Greyfriars Bobby, the 1800s town dog of Edinburgh, Scotland, San Diego's sister city. A copy of the Bum statue is scheduled to be installed near the original Bobby statue in the Scottish capital next summer.

Sculptor carves out Royal role for himself (from the Scotsman)

CELEBRATED artist Sandy Stoddart today declared himself "perfectly thunderstruck" as he was named the Queen's official sculptor in Scotland.

Mr Stoddart has been awarded the title of Sculptor in Ordinary in Scotland, one of only two Scottish posts for the arts in the Royal Household.

The other Royal appointment is Her Majesty's Writer and Limner, a post which has been held by Dame ElizADVERTISEMENTabeth Blackadder since 2000.

The role of Sculptor in Ordinary carries no responsibilities and no pay. It is a lifetime appointment in recognition of the sculptor's "outstanding" contribution to culture.

Paisley-based Mr Stoddart, who will be 50 next year, said: "To be appointed Sculptor in Ordinary to the Queen in Scotland is without doubt the highest honour any Scottish sculptor can receive, and I am perfectly thunderstruck to receive it."

He added: "What I might have done to have this honour conferred upon me is in large part owing to the steady support and great skill of the foundrymen, plaster workers, stonemasons and carvers, architects, planners and engineers with whom it is my privilege to work, in Scotland, England, Italy and America."

The sculptor's works include a bronze statue of philosopher David Hume in Edinburgh's Royal Mile, a sculpture of Adam Smith, also in the Royal Mile, and works for the Queen's Gallery in Buckingham Palace.

Just last month, Mr Stoddart's acclaimed sculpture of Scottish pioneering physicist James Clerk Maxwell was unveiled on George Street in Edinburgh.

The culture minister, Linda Fabiani, said: "I am a great admirer of Sandy's work and consider it proper that his unusually classical style has been recognised as just as relevant today as it was in (first holder of the post] Sir John Steell's day.

"Sandy is celebrated as a modern artist whose work celebrates Scotland's history of great achievements. The subjects of many of his works are our great minds and innovators whose contributions to the world we will be celebrating next year."

The post of Sculptor in Ordinary in Scotland has been vacant for the last three years, since the death in 2005 of the previous holder, Sir Eduardo Paolozzi.

A spokesman for the Scottish Government said there was usually a pause between appointments.

An exhibition of Mr Stoddart's works has been designated as one of next year's Homecoming events.

It will be held at the Hunterian Art Gallery, Glasgow, from 23 May to 12 September.
