I am purchasing a 1936 semi property in Manchester and I am trying to find out what period features the house would have had when it was built as it no longer has any!
Could anybody advise on fireplaces, doors, bannister, coving etc?
In 1936 there were diffrernt styles and diffrernt budgets, just as today. A good starting place is often to visit neighbours with simlar houses and see what features are still in place there.
There is an excellent book available produced by Haynes (same people that do the car repair manuals) called The 1930,s House Manual shows all the structural and internal features as it would have been when built.
It’s written by Ian Rock MRICS and is available for the RICS book shop £19.99.
It’s a good read and contains loads of technical data on that period.
A common decorative feature in those days was graining.
Doors and any wooden features often would have a painted grain applied to them using a metal comb to create the grain effect.
