1850 Vitorian terrace

Hey all first time poster,
So I have a 1850 victortian terrace. the houses next to mine were bombed in the war so they demolished them and built flats next to mine. When i measure the walls from the outside it shows as 9Inch thick walls but when I go in the loft, the side that had the old terrace attached back in the day, I can only see one row of bricks. It just doesnt make sense. From downstairs its 9inches but from upstairs its 4.5 inches?

can someone please shed some light on this please.

Bricks are 9 in long.

Exterior walls are double skinned often back in the day with headers acting as ties.

Maybe they had a shared roof and had to demo the gable when it got hit and rebuilt as single skin.

So the side I am asking about was a party wall. I heard that some victorian houses had a 4.5inch thick party wall not 9inches

Yes, many party walls were 4.5 in.

Mine has the gable walls built in 9 inch brick until you get to the loft when it changes to 4.5 inch. The bit at the top (and one of the gables) was built in 1920 as part of a remodelling. It doesn't seem to be causing problems.

Yes. I don't think the gables carry much load under normal circumstances, the roof truss does that via distribution to the front and rear walls. There are always exceptions obviously.

Thank you. I think mine is the same. But is there any was for me to check to make sure the wall is definetly 9inches? as I know for sure the loft space is 4.5inches on the side im talking about but the other side of the loft is 9inches.

I could do. im just worried about going into the flats next door. As their building is butted up neext to mine
