Well well fank U awl for a very interesting bunch of replies, some of which make calm and sound points. I will reveal that many of my statements have been engineered to provoke a response, to prick some nerves. (Yes I am) What have my panel of researchers gleaned? Here are the results. Washed down with an Allingham placebo

A: 5% of you are clearly very stressed.

B: 10% of you think the most effective or irritating response to a view that you don’t agree with is to criticise spelling or grammar. (Many of who also fall into AJ)

C: 2% have worrying psychopathic traits.

D: 40% of you are helpful enthusiastic Romantic traditionalists and dreamers (which is nice)

E: 5% of you are pulling everyone’s chain to sell something

F: 5% are sad and lonely, then happy then angry then ahhhg!

G: 5% will not of got this far down the list, without the compulsion to reply.

H: 27% actually have a problem with there house and want some advice

I: 5% of you will have noticed the extra 4% this interests me; tell me about your childhood

(I love Allinghams work, such passion and attention to detail, she did embelish a bit but was always accurate and conveyed her love and enthusiasm for the subject).

Well well - we would never have guessed that it was all a put up job! My my! Golly! How the wool has been pulled over the eyes of so many!

Sadly, having passed your results to the tame resident forum researcher used to working with qualitative and quantitive research methods it has been pointed out a) there isn't a large enough sample to make it in any way meaningful and b) anyhow it is bollocks.

But we are all quite happy to argue for the Olympic team as it keeps the grey cells ticking over, and in some cases keeps us in trim for arguing the case where it matters - see my other posts about the current Commons Select Committee investigation, to which I urge others to submit memoranda, and the Heritage lottery Fund. It also means any chance visitor to this forum is left in no doubt that it isn't UK D*Y, and may even have learned something.

Those roofs look a bit in need of repair (stave off repair with daily care etc) and the road is positively grim. Bet it becomes a quagmire in winter. Don't know how our ancestors managed to keep their aprons so white without Bold.

Many of the cottages painted by Allingham still stand.

Ah Evelyn I think under the initial venom I do detect a rye smile. On the subject of Allingham there is an excellent book called Allingham then and now, that has her paintings next to photos of the cottages now. Here is a painting I made for our wall in the Allingham style of my cottage.

I prefer the work of Ralph Hedley to Allingham - Tyneside painter. His Cat in a Cottage Window (which is actually called Blinking in the Sun) has become part of every cat calendar but I first became familiar with it many decades ago, when first acquired by the Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle.

Oh, you'd not get insurance on that one today - far too near the water, flood risk... possibly too it was the water supply to the house, and the means of clothes washing in the 19th century.

At that point in history they had not yet built on the floodplains or block paved over the front gardens for parking, apparently our love of the car is swallowing up many front gardens in favour of parking. this is dramatically adding to surface water run off. The modern world is so wasteful

We used to have a motorbike and sidecar like that when I was a kid! Travelled all over, even though at times we had to get out and walk if there was a particularly steep bank.

I'm sure though that Health and Safety regulations and EU directives must insist that that watercourse is fenced off and warning signs erected to say that a) there may be danger of drowning and b) pollution means that the water is unsafe to drink. Or plodge in. And as for the bridge - doubt the artic could get over it to deliver to the new Tesco built on the outskirts of the village, so it will have to go...
