In our first house, a 1932 mid-terrace we bought in 1975, I designed and fitted our gfch, using original cast-iron rads. Most of them came from an Eagle Star office in Southwark, notably the hall rad which originated in their boardroom. The memory of four of us carrying that rad - it weighed 345lb - down the rickety narrow winding staircase still brings me out in a sweat...

The rad was wall-mounted, and in our hall, I fixed it to the wall using ½” coach screws in No24 fibre Rawlplugs. Used my engine crane to lift it into position.

Only in later years did I realise that the wall was 3" single-skin breeze blocks, and being in effect a partition twixt hall and lounge, was built resting on the floorboards, it had no foundations as such. :shock:
The rad was still there when we sold the house 3 years later. Hope the floor never gets woodworm

That makes me feel really guilty. Our builders had to carry five of them up two long, twisty flights of stairs in our last house!

Don't feel guilt Moo, some of us have to pay good money to go somewhere where there are weights to be lifted. I commented to the trainer only last week that one particular exercise brought back memories of assisting with the unpacking and laying of our new floor.
