Window sanding disaster

Hi,

We have been very diligently sanding down our windows in order to paint to hopefully stop the water ingress, they were pretty bare. Now we have finished the frames look great but we realise we have made a huge boo boo in that we have managed to sand the window panes and there are now horizontal sanding lines! Is there any way to rectify this? In my ignorance I had no idea that sandpaper would sand glass!!

I should say that thankfully these windows are replacements put in by previous owners and we have thank goodness not yet sanded the only two remaining windows which have original glass. This does also pose the question on how on earth you sand the frames without touching the panes?

Help very gratefully received we are now fixated on the marks when looking out of the windows, well my other half is and feel a bit stupid!

Not sure if there is anything you can do to reverse this. We have a couple with similar lines, which bugged me for a month or two but which I never notice now!

Oh dear.

Sand the frames without touching the glass, I think the answer is carefully. Use small pieces of sandpaper, fold them up, etc.

There are companies who can polish marks out of cars windscreens, other than that you'd need to replace the glass, or like worms just learn to ignore it.

I'm sure some gaffa tape around the perimeter of the window would protect the glass. I have similar lines on a few of my old panes from less than careful sanding, but I ignore them. If it really bothers you, it is not very hard to replace glass in single glazed windows.

I thinks it's extremely unlikely that you'll be able to get the sanding marks off the glass. Even if it were possible, the work would probably cost more than new glass.

We live and learn. Don't beat yourself up about it, particularly as it's not old glass. Just bite the bullet and replace it.

I get very irritated when careless decorators use very sharp scrapers to remove paint from window glass and end up scratching it, but I fear there is little one can do to remove them.

I have a old filling knife with slightly worn and rounded edges with I use to clean paint spots off windows without causing damage.

Fold the sandpaper over a small steel ruler in future. It lets you go precisely up to edges and corners.

Many thanks to all we'll just have to try living with it or if not replacing. Will definitely be more careful in future!

Glass is made from sand so it is not really surprising that it is scratched by sandpaper. Decorators have not only scratched my windows but even broken panes by burning off with a blowlamp. Annoying as I cannot tolerate modern float glass and wavy glass is rather expensive.

I'm sure I read on here many, many moons ago, that greenhouse glass is a dirt cheap and a suitably wavy substitute for the real thing.
